The American president Trump says he plans to declare the Strait of Hormuz American territory after the war with Iran ends. He said this during a speech at a police academy on Long Island, in the state of New York.
"As soon as we have defeated Iran, which suffers a heavy defeat, I will declare the Strait of Hormuz American territory," Trump said. "It's really true." He did not provide details on how and when.
Compensation for war damage
The remark comes at a time when peace negotiations to end the war with Iran have stalled and a 60-day ceasefire threatens to expire on Monday without any prospect of extension so far.
Tehran refuses to reopen the strait and has set a series of far-reaching demands for the US for a possible reopening. According to the statement, the US must withdraw troops from the region, lift all sanctions against Iran, and fully compensate for the war damage suffered.
No intimidation
At the same time, the US has been blocking Iranian shipping and ports for months, in an attempt to increase economic pressure on Tehran. The American Treasury Secretary Bessent also announced on Thursday that new economic measures against Iran will be announced next week.
Kazem Gharibabadi, the Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister, responded on X that Tehran will not be intimidated by threats or displays of power from the US. He added that the Strait of Hormuz would only be opened or closed under Iranian authority.
Besides the Iranian nuclear program, the Strait of Hormuz remains an important point of contention between Washington and Tehran. The strait is one of the most important trade routes for oil and gas: one fifth of the world's oil and LNG passes through it. Since the outbreak of the war that the US and Israel started against Iran in February, oil prices have risen sharply.
In mid-July, Iranian forces attacked commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The US responded with heavy bombings on Iranian targets. That escalation of violence marked the end of a temporary ceasefire between the two enemies.
For American Republicans, a quick end to the war is very important. In just under three months, they must answer to voters at the midterms, and high fuel prices are inconvenient for that. The price of gasoline in the US has risen by 24.6 percent over the past year. The war against Iran has little support at home.
