Salad shaped like a damaged Boeing, with sharp flavors and a nod to the news.

A spicy, colorful salad arranged as the side view of a damaged Boeing 737 MAX: long grilled eggplant as the fuselage, halved boiled eggs as cockpit and tail, red pointed pepper as the broken tail. The sharp dressing and tangy onion create tension and a bold flavor landing.

Ingredients

  • 2 eggplants
  • 1 red pointed pepper
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 red onion
  • 100 g feta
  • 1 cucumber
  • 150 g arugula
  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp chili flakes
  • salt and pepper

Method

  1. Slice the eggplants lengthwise into 1 cm thick slices. Brush with 2 tbsp olive oil, sprinkle with salt, and grill for 5 minutes per side until soft and striped.
  2. Boil the eggs for 8 minutes until hard, cool under cold water, peel, and halve.
  3. Cut the pointed pepper in half lengthwise, remove seeds. Cut one half into a sharp point for the tail fin, slice the rest into strips.
  4. Slice the red onion into thin half rings, mix with red wine vinegar, and let marinate for 10 minutes.
  5. Slice the cucumber diagonally into thin slices.
  6. Make the dressing with 2 tbsp olive oil, lemon juice, chili flakes, salt, and pepper.
  7. On a large platter, lay the grilled eggplant slices in a straight line as the airplane fuselage. Place two egg halves at one end as the cockpit, and one half at the other as the tail.
  8. Place the pointed end of the pepper against the tail as the broken tail fin. Scatter the pepper strips around as loose parts.
  9. Arrange arugula, cucumber, pickled onion, and crumbled feta around the plane as 'panic on board'.
  10. Drizzle everything with the spicy dressing.

Serving notes

  • Serve on a long platter for the airplane effect.
  • Let everyone add some 'panic' (onion, feta, pepper) for extra tension.
