A salad with fiery peppers launched like rockets over a seaweed sea.

This salad depicts a salvo of rockets shooting into the sea: long hot peppers as missiles on a bed of seaweed salad. The sharp, sour flavors and contrasting colors highlight the tension of the North Korean missile news.

Ingredients

  • 4 red pointed peppers
  • 2 green jalapeño peppers
  • 150 g seaweed salad (from the sushi section)
  • 1 cucumber
  • 1 lime
  • 4 tbsp rice vinegar
  • 2 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp toasted sesame seeds
  • 1 small red onion
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • salt and black pepper

Method

  1. Slice the pointed peppers lengthwise and remove seeds. Slice the jalapeños lengthwise as well.
  2. Cut the cucumber into long, diagonal slices.
  3. Mix rice vinegar, sesame oil, soy sauce, honey, and lime juice for a dressing. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Slice the red onion into thin rings.
  5. Spread the seaweed salad over a large flat platter to represent the sea.
  6. Arrange the halved pointed peppers and jalapeños diagonally from one side of the platter toward the center, like launching rockets.
  7. Place cucumber slices between the peppers as smoke trails.
  8. Sprinkle onion rings and sesame seeds over everything.
  9. Drizzle with dressing just before serving.

Serving notes

  • Serve on a large white platter for extra contrast.
  • Angle the peppers outward as if launching into the sea.
  • For extra tension: add more jalapeño.
