Thousands of people in the Thai capital Bangkok have been evacuated due to heavy rainfall. They can find shelter in more than 200 evacuation centers spread across the city. In recent days, at least eight people have died in Thailand because of the severe weather.
Bangkok has been plagued by floods for days. In a few days, as much rain fell as normally in the entire month of September. It concerns an average of 320 millimeters of rain per square meter, which overloaded the drainage system. Residents sometimes stand waist-deep in water.
Grocery shopping
Yet that does not stop everyone from going to the market. In the Bang Kapi district in the east of the capital, people roam the market with water up to their knees. Market vendors sell vegetables, fruit, and fish from boats and improvised rafts.
It almost looks like a normal day at the market, except that everyone stands knee-deep in water:
At least 80,000 residents cannot leave their homes due to the floods, states the Thai Ministry of Interior; grocery shopping is not possible for them. Therefore, the ministry offers meals as long as the floods last and for seven days afterwards.
Due to the severe weather, fewer buses and trains are running; especially long-distance trips have been canceled. According to local authorities, at least 31 roads are affected by the floods. Airplanes still take off, although travelers may experience delays.
Blows to the economy
More than half of all provinces in Thailand are affected by the floods, Thai authorities told news agency Reuters. Especially in the central and eastern parts of Thailand, the severe weather causes problems.
The expectation is that the economic damage from the floods will be greatest in Bangkok and the eastern part of the country. In Bangkok, shops are mainly affected; elsewhere, the damage to industry and agriculture is significant. Thailand has the second largest economy in Southeast Asia.
Drainage basin
Bangkok lies above sea level but is surrounded by mountainous areas. When it rains heavily, the Thai capital turns into the drainage basin of the region. Meanwhile, Bangkok sinks a few millimeters every year. More than 8.4 million people in the city face the rainy season, which lasts about half a year.
Last year, Thailand was also hit by floods. Then, an average of 630 millimeters of rain per square meter fell in three days. 145 people died; tens of thousands of buildings were affected, including houses, schools, and hospitals.
On average, more rain falls, differences between areas and seasons are large
Warm air holds more moisture. In a warming world, there is therefore more moisture in the atmosphere, which comes down again in the form of rain. Evaporation also increases in a warming world. Due to climate change, the number of showers increases and more rain falls, although the effects vary greatly from place to place and from season to season. In general, wet places become wetter.
