Two leaders of the Indian Cockroach Movement have been sentenced to five days in jail. They are Ashutosh Ranka and Saurav Das, who belong to a group of people arrested yesterday during a protest after climbing over barricades.
They did this at the protest site Jantar Mantar in the center of New Delhi. By climbing over the barricades, they entered an area where, according to the police, demonstrations are not permitted.
The Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi called it a "cowardly act" on X and condemned the arrests: "Jantar Mantar belongs to the Indian people. We will take it back."
Leaders arrested
On Saturday, several leaders of the movement were arrested even before the demonstration against Prime Minister Modi had properly begun. The square where they were demonstrating was blocked by police vehicles equipped with devices to fire tear gas.
In addition, the internet was almost completely shut down and more than forty metro stations were closed. Buses were also pulled over to the side of the road to pick up demonstrators.
Leaders of the movement who traveled to Delhi by plane were arrested on board the flight. The following day, three of them were released, while two were sentenced to a short jail term.
Controversial elections
Their sentencing follows a week of protests by the Cockroach Movement, during which thousands of supporters were reportedly arrested according to the group.
In the past week, protests were held in India for days due to a controversial revision of electoral rolls. According to demonstrators, this revision will prevent millions of Indians from voting in future elections. The protesters therefore demand the resignation of the head of the Indian Election Commission, Gyanesh Kumar.
According to the Election Commission, the revision is necessary to remove invalid registrations. Opponents argue that mainly minorities, especially Muslims, lose their voting rights as a result. They see the legislative change as an attempt to secure the next election victories for the current prime minister's party.
What is the Cockroach Movement?
The Cockroach Movement is a prominent movement in the ongoing wave of public discontent with the government of Indian Prime Minister Modi. The actions began with calls for education reforms after a major exam fraud scandal.
Indirectly, that scandal cost the lives of more than twenty students who committed suicide due to psychological pressure. For days, thousands of students took to the streets to demand the resignation of the Minister of Education. That official has since resigned.
The protest movement embraced the name 'Cockroaches' after a judge called the supporters that. The judge referred to young people without education or jobs who engage in activism or journalism as cockroaches and parasites.
