China and India want to jointly work towards a solution for the border dispute between the two countries. This was reported by the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs after a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
The two spoke today at the BRICS summit in New Delhi. The ministry stated after the meeting that "the two leaders have expressed support for a fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable solution."
For decades, there has been a conflict between China and India over the border that runs through the Himalaya mountains. In 2020, there was a military confrontation. Twenty Indian and four Chinese soldiers died in that incident.
Since then, relations between the two countries have improved again, but on both sides of the 3,500-kilometer-long border there is still a significant military presence.
Record amount of trade
The Chinese and Indian industries also suffer from regulations and logistical problems when they want to trade with each other, while economic relations are becoming increasingly stronger. According to data from Chinese customs, the countries traded with each other last year for a record amount of over 155 billion dollars.
"The two leaders emphasized the need to promote cultural exchanges, business connections, and mobility between the two countries," said the Indian ministry in a statement.
Because of the BRICS meeting, President Xi is in India for the first time since 2019. That fact alone is seen as a gradual improvement of the relationship between the neighboring countries.
Statement on the Middle East
BRICS is a cooperation between eleven countries, founded by Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, allies of the US, are also members, as is Iran.
At the summit, the attending countries reached a joint statement. In it, they call on the warring parties in the Middle East to exercise restraint, without naming countries.
Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are directly affected by the war between the US, Israel, and Iran. At the summit, Iranian President Pezeshkian and the Crown Prince of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi spoke to each other for the first time since the start of the conflict.
Chinese President Xi called on the BRICS countries to act as peacemakers in the Middle East conflict, because the war "is not in the general interest of the international community," quoted state broadcaster CCTV.
Half of the world population
The BRICS cooperation was founded in 2009 with the aim of strengthening the mutual economy and providing a counterbalance to the West. The group has expanded considerably in recent years. Among others, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Indonesia joined.
The group of countries now represents more than half of the world population and a quarter of the global economy.
Also Belarus, Bolivia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Nigeria, Thailand, Uganda, Uzbekistan, and Vietnam joined BRICS as partner countries in 2025.
