At the United Nations Security Council, Russia has once again rejected proposals for a ceasefire in the Ukraine war. Foreign Minister Lavrov said that such a pause would only be used by some countries "to flood Ukraine with weapons."
Lavrov reiterated during the meeting in New York that Moscow is willing to negotiate a lasting peace, but does not want to simply "pause" the war. On Saturday, Lavrov will speak again in New York, this time at the UN General Assembly.
North Koreans
President Zelensky of Ukraine did so today. He called on countries to stop doing business with Russia. "Those who give the Russians more money through trade prolong the war," Zelensky said. In his speech, he also announced that Ukraine has handed over two captured North Korean soldiers to South Korea. North Korean troops are fighting alongside the Russian side.
According to Zelensky, many North Korean soldiers have already died and it is rare for them to be captured. "These boys are hard to catch," Zelensky said. "One of them tried to kill himself, but fate did not let him die."
This week, world leaders are gathering in New York. Nieuwsuur spoke with former D66 leader Sigrid Kaag and others about the relevance of the United Nations.
On the sidelines of the UN summit in New York, Prime Minister Jetten spoke with Zelensky. Jetten emphasized that the government in Kyiv must continue with reforms and fighting corruption. In recent months, several major corruption cases have come to light in Ukraine.
The Dutch prime minister has offered Zelensky knowledge and expertise to help combat corruption and remove regulations.
Putin invited
US Secretary of State Rubio had a meeting in New York with his Russian counterpart Lavrov. Afterwards, Rubio said he invited President Putin to the G20 summit, which will be held in December in Miami.
Rubio said it would be good for "solving the problems" if Putin attends that meeting of the largest industrial countries. "We hope he accepts the invitation," Rubio said.
Putin has not attended a G20 summit since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
