Journalists from the major American news organizations CNN, MS NOW and Politico were denied access to the White House today. The measure had already been announced yesterday by President Trump. The reason is reporting that he does not like.
The White House reporters from CNN and MS NOW reported live today that they were refused access to the White House when they arrived there for their work. Shortly thereafter, Politico reported that their White House reporter was also not allowed inside and that her pass was confiscated.
Their employers responded combatively to the situation. Jonathan Greenberger, editor-in-chief of Politico, said in a statement to the editorial staff: "We stand behind her and all reporters here who are reporting. We will vigorously defend our rights under the First Amendment."
Personal movement
CNN and MS NOW issued similar statements. "We will not be distracted from our duty to hold the government and other public institutions accountable," CNN reported. MS NOW (formerly MSNBC) wrote: "The White House belongs to the American people and the decisions made there are funded with our tax money."
MS NOW further said it was "determined" to "take all necessary steps to defend our rights under the First Amendment and the essential role of independent journalism in our democracy."
The pressure from Trump and his administration on certain media has been ongoing for some time. Both the news companies and individual journalists are regularly targeted. Employees of the news organizations have been attacked personally or via social media, sometimes in a personal manner by insulting them during press conferences.
'No disadvantage for words'
Trump has also filed lawsuits and demanded huge damages against various media, including The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and the BBC. In all cases, it concerns reporting that displeased him.
The president also decided last year to deny reporters from the American news agency AP access to the Oval Office, Air Force One and certain events. The reason: AP refused to speak of the Gulf of America, as Trump wants.
AP announced today that it supports the news organizations that have been banned from access. "No news organization or person should be disadvantaged by the government because of the words they use," said AP.
