The American country artist Dolly Parton passed away today at the age of 80. Her family announced this via her Facebook and Instagram accounts.
Her death was announced by her cousin and head of security, Brian Seaver. Parton had asked him years ago to broadcast this video after her death. He said nothing about the cause of death, only that she "passed away in peace."
A number of well-known songs by Parton in a row:
Last year, Parton was in the news because her health was said to have deteriorated. Her sister had asked fans to pray for her and a series of performances in Las Vegas were postponed. She had to undergo a medical procedure, but it was not disclosed what it was about.
Parton denied that anything serious was wrong with her. "I'm not ready to die yet," she said. "I think God has further plans for me and I'm not done with my work yet."
In August this year, she said in an interview in People magazine that she had neglected her health while caring for her husband Carl, who passed away in March last year.
Growing up in poverty
Dolores Rebecca Parton grew up in a family with twelve children in the American state of Tennessee. Her song Coat of Many Colours is about the poverty in her youth.
Her first performances were in the church where her father preached. At the age of ten she learned to play guitar, at thirteen she performed for the first time at the Grand Ole Opry, the mecca of country music in the city of Nashville.
Her breakthrough to a larger audience dates from the late 1960s, early 1970s; first with country singer Porter Wagoner, later solo and in collaboration with other well-known country and pop artists such as Kenny Rogers, Linda Ronstadt and Emmylou Harris.
More than 100 million records
During her life, Parton sold more than 100 million records worldwide, making her one of the best-selling artists in history.
She has more than 3000 songs to her name, which she wrote for herself and for other artists. Jolene, 9 to 5 and I Will Always Love You were three of her biggest hits.
Parton also proved to be a good businesswoman. For example, she monetized her fame with the theme park Dollywood in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
