A Flydubai aircraft en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv may have escaped a terrorist attack. This picture emerges from initial eyewitness reports and recordings from the aircraft. At the same time, much remains unclear. Israeli security services have not yet drawn public conclusions and say they are investigating what happened on board.
Almost two and a half hours after the plane took off in Dubai, it sent a first distress signal over Saudi Arabia. Seven minutes later, it reported a possible hijacking. The aircraft then disappeared from radar. Israeli fighter jets then took to the air towards the plane and Israeli airspace was closed.
Pilots in civilian clothes
Eyewitnesses on board told Israeli media that the co-pilot attacked the captain of flight FZ1073 and stabbed him multiple times. The Jerusalem Post writes that after stabbing, the co-pilot tried to push the captain out of the cockpit.
After that, the cockpit door was opened, upon which two pilots traveling as passengers reportedly overpowered the co-pilot. Two other pilots seated at the back of the plane were then alerted. "I shouted at them to run and take control of the plane," an eyewitness told The Jerusalem Post.
There was great panic on board at that moment, one of the passengers told Israeli news channel Channel 12. Also because the plane made several dives, totaling about 4200 meters. "We heard shouting and screaming. When the cockpit was opened, we saw there was blood. We realized someone had stabbed the pilot."
A mother of one of the passengers shared her story at Tel Aviv airport. According to her, the panic on board was great:
Another newspaper, The Times of Israel, shares a video of a passenger with blood on his face who says that "a terrorist has been overpowered." "Everyone on board is safe, except the pilot," he then says. "We need help."
After passengers managed to overpower the co-pilot, the two pilots in civilian clothes took control of the plane. First aid was given to the injured captain by a dentist who was on board, according to an eyewitness. Footage shows the man is seriously injured.
Landed in Saudi Arabia
The Jerusalem Post reports that Israeli security services suspect it was a terror act. The Israeli newspaper Haaretz writes, based on an anonymous government official, that authorities are treating the incident as a terror act and consider that one of the pilots may have deliberately wanted to crash the plane.
Eventually, the plane landed in the Saudi city of Tabuk, in the north of the country. Footage after the landing shows that the tail of the Boeing 737 MAX has sustained considerable damage. It appears that a part of the plane has broken off. This is likely due to the dives the plane made.
Both the captain and the co-pilot were transferred to the hospital in Tabuk, the airport said in a press release. Israeli media write that the co-pilot is from Oman, but this has not been confirmed. According to Israeli media, there were about 150 Israelis on board.
