The leader of the controversial Unification Church has been sentenced by a South Korean court to two years in prison for corruption. Hak Ja Han is said to have bribed the wife of the ousted South Korean president Yoon and embezzled church funds.
The Seoul court established that Hak's church gave two Chanel bags and a diamond necklace to Kim Keon Hee, the wife of the ousted president Yoon Suk Yeol. This was done to obtain political favors. The "gifts" had a combined value of 80 million won, approximately 50,000 euros.
Han, the widow of the church's founder, has always denied the allegations and said her subordinates acted without her knowledge. Her lawyers immediately stated that Han will appeal the verdict.
In January, Kim was already sentenced to twenty months in prison for accepting the bribes. The former first lady of South Korea eventually admitted to receiving the Chanel bags but said she later returned them unused.
Safe with 19 million dollars
According to South Korean prosecutors, this is the first time authorities have been able to prove that the church, also known as the Moon sect, tried to buy political influence. Photos were shown during the charges against Han of Han's personal safe containing 19 million US dollars in cash, over 16 million euros.
The Unification Church called Hak's arrest last September an "attack on religious freedom." The church called for the release of "the Mother of Peace."
The Unification Church, officially known as the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification, was founded in the 1950s in South Korea by Sun Myung Moon, who proclaimed himself the messiah. He also added several chapters to the Bible. He married the then 17-year-old Han, with whom he had fourteen children. Ten of them are still alive.
The church is best known for mass weddings. Thousands of couples are simultaneously joined in marriage by Han and her late husband Sun. The now 83-year-old Han conducted such a ceremony last year.
The church has often been criticized as a "sect-like" group. Lawyers have accused the church of forcing followers to donate large sums of money. Critics call members 'Moonies,' after founder Sun Myung Moon. Church members consider that name offensive.
The church has followers worldwide and has held multiple mass wedding ceremonies in the US. The church has close ties with politicians in Seoul, Tokyo, and also Washington. At the opening of a church think tank in 2021, several politicians sent video messages with congratulations. Among them were Donald Trump, former Vice President Mike Pence, and the mayor of Seoul.
Under fire in Japan
Remarkably, there was also a congratulation from Shinzo Abe. The Unification Church came under scrutiny in Japan in 2022 after the assassination of former Prime Minister Shinzo. The perpetrator, Tetsuya Yamagami, stated at the time that he acted out of resentment over the ties between Abe and the Unification Church, to which his mother had donated all her money. As a result, the church lost its religious status.
A court in Tokyo ruled last year that the organization caused "unprecedented large-scale damage" through spiritual fraud and offers no prospect of improvement. The church appealed to the Japanese Supreme Court, but it upheld the earlier court decision.
The assassination of Abe and Yamagami's statement in 2022 led to a media storm in Japan in which the role of the Unification Church and its controversial fundraising were closely examined. Soon after the attack, it became clear that the Unification Church had indeed maintained close ties for decades with important politicians, including Abe himself.
