Golden cake balls to share, inspired by the discovery of a million-euro treasure.

Festive golden cake balls with a touch of Belgian chocolate, rolled in edible gold dust. Perfect for sharing after an unexpected discovery, inspired by the million-euro treasure found in the Sint-Gillis-Dendermonde cellar.

Ingredients

  • 200 g cake (plain or vanilla)
  • 75 g cream cheese
  • 50 g Belgian dark chocolate
  • 2 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Edible gold dust (available at baking stores)

Method

  1. Crumble the cake into a large bowl.
  2. Melt the chocolate using a bain-marie or microwave.
  3. Mix cream cheese, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract into the cake crumbs.
  4. Add the melted chocolate and mix into a cohesive dough.
  5. Roll small balls the size of coins from the dough.
  6. Chill the balls in the fridge for 30 minutes.
  7. Roll the chilled balls in edible gold dust until shiny.

Serving notes

  • Serve on a platter with a small 'treasure chest' as garnish (edible or decorative).
  • Sprinkle extra gold dust over the platter for a festive effect.
