Two flavors, two halves, one sharp border: taste the trade war.

A sharp, layered salad in a square dish: one half with Canadian ingredients (red cabbage, cheddar), the other with American (corn, blue cheese), divided by a row of pearl onions as the 'border'. The plating visualizes the tense trade border and the 'dollar for dollar' response.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 small red cabbage
  • 2 carrots
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 100 g grated cheddar (Canadian)
  • 100 g blue cheese (American)
  • 1 can corn (150 g drained)
  • 8 pearl onions (from a jar)
  • 4 tbsp white wine vinegar
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp mustard
  • 1 tsp honey
  • salt and pepper

Method

  1. Slice the red cabbage into thin strips.
  2. Coarsely grate the carrots.
  3. Dice the bell pepper.
  4. In a bowl, mix the cabbage, carrot, and bell pepper with 2 tbsp vinegar, 1 tbsp oil, salt, and pepper.
  5. Let sit for 10 minutes.
  6. In another bowl, mix the corn with blue cheese, 2 tbsp vinegar, 1 tbsp oil, mustard, honey, salt, and pepper.
  7. Take a square dish or plate.
  8. Fill one half with the cabbage mixture and sprinkle with cheddar.
  9. Fill the other half with the corn-blue cheese mixture.
  10. Lay a straight row of pearl onions exactly in the center as a border.
  11. Serve immediately.

Serving notes

  • Use a square dish for a real border effect.
  • Lay the pearl onions straight in the center, not at an angle.
  • Serve cold for maximum sharpness.
