Double Vote Sour Race

TypeSide dish

DateOctober 24, 2026

Two pickles race neck-and-neck on spicy onions: the ballot as a tense side dish.

Two identical, long pickles lie neck-and-neck on a bed of spicy red onion rings and sharp mustard sauce. The plate resembles a ballot: two candidates, one race. The sour and sharp flavors pull against each other, just like the tense Alaska election.

Ingredients

  • 2 large sour pickles
  • 2 large sweet-sour pickles
  • 2 red onions
  • 2 tbsp coarse mustard
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 1 tbsp white wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp honey
  • 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 tbsp fresh dill, finely chopped

Method

  1. Slice the red onions into thin rings.
  2. Mix the onion rings with the white wine vinegar, a pinch of salt, and the honey. Let marinate for 15 minutes.
  3. Mix the mustard, mayonnaise, black pepper, and half the dill into a sauce.
  4. Slice the pickles lengthwise to get four long halves of each kind.
  5. On each plate, arrange a bed of marinated onion rings in a rectangular, ballot-like shape.
  6. On each plate, lay two different pickle halves tightly side by side, as two 'candidates' neck-and-neck on the ballot.
  7. Drizzle the mustard sauce in a stripe between the pickles, as a dividing line.
  8. Garnish with the remaining dill.

Serving notes

  • Serve cold for extra tension.
  • Let each guest 'vote' for their favorite pickle with their fork.
