Ukrainian drones carried out a drone attack deep inside Russia on an important gas city in Siberia. According to Ukraine, it is the first Ukrainian drone attack so deep in Russia.
The attack was announced by the Russian governor of the region. He reported that the attack was averted, but that the debris caused fires. According to the governor, no one was injured. He called on residents to remain calm.
The drone landed in Novy Urengoy, about 2800 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Novy Urengoy is an important city for Russian gas production and is located in the autonomous district of Yamalia, which is very important for Russian gas and oil extraction. The city is also called the "Russian gas capital."
Ukraine has confirmed the attack. President Zelensky said on X that it was a "completely justified" attack "in a way that the enemy really feels."
In July this year, Ukraine also attacked the Russian industrial city of Omsk. That city is about 2500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border. Due to the ongoing attacks by Ukraine on Russian oil refineries, Russia is experiencing major fuel shortages.
Many drones
President Zelensky warned last week that all airlines must avoid Russian airspace. According to Zelensky, there are now so many Ukrainian drones flying around that civilian aircraft risk being hit.
Russia also carried out attacks on Ukraine again last night. In the capital Kyiv, one person died and seven were injured, Zelensky reports. In Sumy, a shopping center was hit. Two people were killed and fourteen were injured. Also in Mykolaiv, two people died, Zelensky said.
He wants countries to increase pressure on Russia. "Unfortunately, the international community has responded too little to these attacks, which cost lives almost daily," Zelensky wrote on X.
Russian drones also hit a border crossing between Ukraine and Moldova today. According to Moldovan Prime Minister Sandu, two people died and three were injured. Thousands of people cross the border here daily. Due to the attack, the border crossing is temporarily closed.
Sandu condemned the attack and called for more air defense for Ukraine. "Yesterday, a Russian drone forced us to temporarily close our airspace. Today, Russia is attacking the border crossings to Moldova," Sandu wrote. "The Russian front line is moving further west, therefore air defense for Ukraine is of utmost importance."
Zelensky's plane
Yesterday, Zelensky was visiting Moldova. Upon his departure, the plane the president was in was almost hit by a drone. This was reported by Norwegian Prime Minister Støre. It is unclear where the drone came from or what type of drone it was.
Zelensky traveled to Norway for the funeral of Norwegian King Harald and spoke with the prime minister about, among other things, military cooperation.
