American talk show host Jimmy Kimmel cancels interview 'after pressure from Trump administration'
An interview with a Democratic politician is not allowed to be broadcast on the American show of presenter Jimmy Kimmel. The presenter said this yesterday on his own program. The interview with politician James Talarico, which was to be aired today, has been canceled and will only be available on YouTube. Talarico is currently a candidate for the Texas state senate.
According to Kimmel, heavy pressure was exerted by the Trump administration. Ultimately, media regulator FCC reportedly threatened legal action. The FCC has not yet responded to Kimmel's accusations.
During a long monologue, Kimmel said: "Tomorrow night I will interview James Talarico under unusual circumstances. For more than twenty years I have interviewed Americans running for political office on this show without problems." He then referred to an interview with Trump in 2015. At that time, Trump was participating in the presidential primaries.
FCC not independent
Kimmel continued: "Now that he is president, his FCC has threatened measures against me, against our show, against our channel ABC, our regional broadcasters and local stations. Purely because of usual, traditional editorial choices and inviting guests who apparently displease them."
According to Kimmel, he had to make this decision because "local stations and ABC partners in Texas would otherwise have to deal with this hassle."
In the US, the FCC is considered an independent regulator, but currently it is not, critics say. It is headed by a chairman appointed by Trump and the direction is strongly influenced by the administration.
Previously pressured
This is not the first time Kimmel has clashed with the regulator. Last September, his show was even temporarily canceled due to a remark about the murdered conservative political activist Charlie Kirk. He said the Trump administration exploited Kirk's death. After heavy pressure, ABC, which broadcasts his show, decided to take him off the air indefinitely.
This then led to a storm of reactions. ABC owner Disney received many cancellations and well-known Hollywood actors also expressed their support for Kimmel. He then got his show back.
That decision also received a response from President Trump himself. On his platform he wrote: "I can't believe ABC Fake News gave Jimmy Kimmel his show back. The White House had heard from ABC that his show was canceled!"
