Lasagna that looks neat but is spicy and sharp inside: a scandal on your plate.

A lasagna that looks tidy but hides a spicy layer of grilled vegetables and sharp sauce. Neatly stacked, but every bite has a sting beneath the surface. Perfect for those who like scandals on the table.

Ingredients

  • 12 lasagna sheets
  • 2 eggplants, sliced
  • 2 zucchinis, sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, in strips
  • 650 g ground beef
  • 300 g onions, chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cans diced tomatoes (400 g)
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp chili flakes
  • 100 g Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 250 g ricotta
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°C. Grill the eggplant, zucchini, and bell pepper until nicely charred.
  2. Sauté the onion and garlic in olive oil. Add the ground beef and brown.
  3. Add tomato paste, diced tomatoes, and chili flakes. Simmer for 10 minutes. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Mix the ricotta with some salt and pepper.
  5. Grease a baking dish. Start with a layer of sauce, then lasagna sheets, grilled vegetables, ricotta, and Parmesan. Repeat, ending with sauce and cheese.
  6. Bake the lasagna for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Let rest for 10 minutes before slicing.

Serving notes

  • Garnish with a thin layer of parsley: as green as the Croatian landscape, but let the sharp sauce show through.
  • Serve with a small Croatian flag for the scandal effect.
