High Five Rivalry Soup

Based on:

TypeSoup

Serves4 people

DateAugust 19, 2026

Two fiery soups in one bowl, split by blue turf and united by five edible high fives.

A spicy-sour duo: Indian tomato soup and Pakistani lentil soup, each filling half a bowl, separated by a blue yogurt (artificial turf) stripe. Five crispy papadums as high fives lie on the border. The colors and layout mimic the hockey field and rivalry, with clashing and connecting sharp, fresh flavors.

Ingredients

  • 2 onions
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 400 g canned diced tomatoes
  • 150 g red lentils
  • 1 l vegetable stock
  • 2 tbsp grated ginger
  • 1 green chili pepper
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp garam masala
  • 1 tbsp cumin powder
  • 1 tbsp coriander powder
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 100 ml full-fat yogurt
  • 1/2 tsp spirulina powder (for blue yogurt, optional)
  • 5 papadums
  • 4 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • Salt and pepper

Method

  1. Finely chop the onions and garlic.
  2. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a pan, sauté 1 onion and 1 clove garlic with 1 tbsp ginger and the green chili (finely chopped).
  3. Add tomato paste, diced tomatoes, and garam masala. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  4. Blend the soup smooth, season with salt, pepper, and 1 tbsp lemon juice. Keep warm.
  5. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a second pan, sauté the other onion and garlic with 1 tbsp ginger.
  6. Add lentils, cumin, coriander powder, and stock. Simmer for 20 minutes until lentils are soft.
  7. Blend the lentil soup, season with salt, pepper, and 1 tbsp lemon juice. Keep warm.
  8. Mix yogurt with spirulina powder to turn it blue (optional, otherwise keep it white).
  9. Bake or roast the papadums according to package instructions.
  10. Pour the tomato soup on one side and the lentil soup on the other in a wide oval bowl. Spoon a stripe of blue yogurt in the middle as 'artificial turf'.
  11. Place five papadums as 'high fives' along the border. Garnish with coriander.

Serving notes

  • Serve in an oval or rectangular dish for the hockey field effect.
  • Stand the papadums upright or at an angle along the 'border' as high fives.
  • Sprinkle fresh coriander on both halves for extra color.
