Hormuz Blockade on a Plate

Based on:

TypeMain course

Serves4 people

DateAugust 29, 2026

The Strait of Hormuz as an edible blockade: stew, eggplants as the narrow passage, eggs as trapped ships.

A sharp, Iranian-inspired lamb stew with sour lemon, styled as the narrow Strait of Hormuz: stacked grilled eggplant slices form the blockade, with halved boiled eggs as stranded ships. The plate reads geopolitical tension: blocked, sharp, and sour.

Ingredients

  • 800 g lamb stew meat, cubed
  • 2 large eggplants
  • 1 onion
  • 3 cloves garlic
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Iranian lime powder (or sumac)
  • 1 fresh lemon
  • 1 red chili pepper
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1 tsp coriander seeds
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 can diced tomatoes (400 g)
  • 3 tbsp olive oil
  • salt and pepper
  • 1 bunch flat-leaf parsley

Method

  1. Boil the eggs for 8 minutes until hard, peel and halve them.
  2. Slice the eggplants lengthwise into thick slices.
  3. Heat 2 tbsp olive oil in a large Dutch oven. Brown the lamb on all sides.
  4. Add chopped onion, minced garlic, cumin, coriander, and sliced chili. Sauté for 3 minutes.
  5. Add tomato paste and cook briefly.
  6. Add diced tomatoes, lime powder, juice of the lemon, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 1.5 hours until the meat is tender.
  7. Meanwhile, grill the eggplant slices with some oil and salt until nicely browned and cooked through.
  8. Season the stew with extra lemon and salt if needed.
  9. Spoon the stew onto a large platter. Arrange the eggplant slices as a narrow, zigzag blockade across the center.
  10. Behind the eggplant, line up the halved eggs as stranded ships.
  11. Garnish with parsley.

Serving notes

  • Serve on a long platter for the strait effect.
  • Sprinkle the eggs lightly with sumac for extra tension.
