Flávio Bolsonaro suspected of multi-million fraud in scandal surrounding film about father
The Brazilian Supreme Court and the federal police have launched a large-scale investigation into presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro for possible corruption and money laundering. One month before the presidential elections in Brazil, the authorities link the challenger of current president Lula to multi-million fraud.
Documents released by the Supreme Court yesterday reveal that the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro is suspected of accepting more than 10 million euros from a controversial banker. Bolsonaro used this money from Daniel Vorcaro to make a controversial film about his father's life.
Largest bank fraud ever
The Supreme Court wants to know exactly where this money came from. Vorcaro is the central figure in the largest bank fraud case in Brazil. The former executive of the now bankrupt Banco Master is accused of defrauding about 800,000 bank customers of hundreds of millions of dollars. He allegedly financed a luxurious lifestyle for himself. He has been in custody since the end of last year.
Among those customers were also government pension funds and the state bank, according to suspicions. Through Vorcaro's gift to Bolsonaro, public money that was actually intended for social projects in the country would have gone to the biopic about Jair Bolsonaro. According to the plan, the film, called The Dark Horse, was to be released today in Brazil, but it seems to have been postponed for unknown reasons.
Firearms at parliament member
In an attempt to gain more insight into the financial management surrounding the film, major police operations took place yesterday. The federal police conducted house searches, among others, at right-wing parliament member Mário Frias, who is closely linked to the Bolsonaros and is involved as a producer in the film about Bolsonaro senior. The police found seven firearms at his home.
Earlier, Flávio Bolsonaro admitted that he had made a phone call to Vorcaro in which he asked for money for the film. During a campaign meeting in Manaus today, he denied that he crossed an ethical line with this. According to him, he received "private money." He called the criminal investigation "an attempt to interfere in the elections."
Neck-and-neck race
Next month there will be presidential elections in Brazil. According to recent polls, this will result in a neck-and-neck race between right-wing Flávio Bolsonaro and current left-wing president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.
Jair Bolsonaro, who was president from 2019 to 2022, was sentenced last year to 27 years in prison because he had tried to stage a coup after the 2022 elections. Those elections were won by Lula.
