Chinese President Xi Jinping was received by President Trump at the White House in Washington DC. In speeches, the presidents exchanged compliments but also made clear which political discussion points are on the table during Xi's state visit.
Xi said, among other things, that he is happy to visit "your beautiful country" and that he is in the US to "continue our friendship and expand cooperation."
Trump said that he and Xi "have a great friendship" based on "mutual respect."
Xi is in the US for one and a half days in the year the country celebrates 250 years of the United States. Trump said they will go to the National Archives tomorrow to "look at some of the greatest treasures of proud history, including the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution."
Xi touched on artificial intelligence (AI) in his speech. "We have both the capacity and the responsibility to develop AI and to ensure that the development of AI is always under human control and serves the welfare of the people."
Both China and the US are keen to become leaders in applying AI. Currently, American tech companies are leading, but China is also investing heavily in AI.

Xi also emphasized the importance of cooperation between the two economic powers. He called for improved communication between China and the US and urged not to see competition as a matter of winning or losing. "It must be a race to catch up with each other, not a struggle where one wins and one loses."
At the start of his second term, Trump unleashed a trade war by imposing import tariffs, including on products from China.
Xi responded with additional import taxes on American goods. Last year, the two reached a trade truce that led to somewhat better relations. They agreed on lower import tariffs. Also, Chinese export restrictions on critical rare earth metals were put on hold.
Today, US Treasury Secretary Bessent announced that the trade truce, which was to expire in a month and a half, will be extended by two months.
Panda diplomacy
Xi also announced that in the coming five years, 100,000 American youths will be allowed to come to China for study. China will also send two pandas to a zoo in Atlanta in the coming days. Zoo Atlanta had already announced earlier this year that two pandas would arrive.
Giant pandas are only found in China, and the country regularly uses them as a diplomatic tool. It is a way for Chinese authorities to strengthen ties. China rents the animals to a zoo for a certain amount per year.
Not live on TV
Press conferences at the White House are usually broadcast live by major American news channels. This time that is not the case due to the White House's refusal to admit reporters from Politico, CNN, and MS NOW, despite a court ruling. Video recordings of the speeches were made and distributed by the White House itself.
As a result, there is little footage of Xi's visit to Trump now:
