Flemish vlogger harassed in video, Public Prosecution Service investigates homophobic violence
The Ghent police are investigating an incident in which a Belgian influencer and his friend were harassed on the street. The police have forwarded the information about the incident to the Public Prosecution Service (OM).
The footage, which influencer Jonatan Medart shared himself, has caused a lot of commotion in Belgium. In the video, the well-known vlogger can be seen walking through Ghent with his friend while a number of men follow behind them shouting "homo" at them.
According to Medart, even more vulgar remarks about his sexual orientation were shouted. He showed the men recognizably in the video and said in the video that he was going to share the footage.
Medart stated in a message that he deliberately shared the footage with the video. "What sounds funny to you as a joke feels very unsafe to us," he wrote among other things. "Love is love and as long as this keeps happening daily, there is Pride and I will keep forcing that message down your throat. Know better, go away and leave us alone."
Support
Although there are mainly messages of support on social media, a lawyer cited by VRT News is less positive about the influencer's action. According to the well-known Belgian criminal lawyer Joris Van Cauter, it is good to make footage so that it can be used as evidence.
"But he did not blur faces. Everyone is therefore recognizable. He said: I am now going to take revenge. I will nail you to the pillory. Then you play judge and executioner," says the criminal lawyer.
Footage removed
In the meantime, the influencer has removed the footage. He says he was approached by two of the five men who were visible in the video. They stated they had nothing to do with the incident. Vlogger Medart initially assumed that all five men belonged to the same group.
"Three of them I have already shown cursing in the footage, the other two are just walking in the picture and actually did nothing wrong," he writes. "For that reason, it feels wrong to leave that video up and insinuate that they were also involved in the incident." He apologizes to the two boys.
Construction company
One of the men who possibly followed the influencer and his friend wore a shirt with the logo of a Ghent construction company in the video. That construction company has issued a statement. "In the footage, a person can be seen wearing our company clothing. We want to emphasize that the homophobic remarks and behavior in this video are completely contrary to the values and norms of our company," the company writes.
The Ghent police have a special reporting point for, among other things, LGBTIQ-related violence and discrimination. Medart has been approached by them to file a report. He will do so. "I am not doing this for myself because Seppe (Medart's partner, ed.) and I are currently fine, but for the LGBTQAI+ people who have also experienced this and find the threshold to go to the police just a bit too high."
Known to a large audience
Belgian media have given extensive attention to the incident and its aftermath. The 26-year-old Medart is well known to a large audience in Flanders. His videos are especially popular on TikTok. In 2020, he made a song about the coronavirus pandemic that was viewed more than five million times on the social medium.
He makes funny videos but also discusses more serious topics. He also participated in De Slimste Mens ter Wereld and Dancing With The Stars and appeared in the Flemish versions of De Verraders and Het Perfecte Plaatje.
