Power Outage Soup with Fallen Trees

Based on:

TypeStarter

DateOctober 23, 2026

Creamy soup with fallen breadsticks as trees: comfort during storms and power outages.

A steaming bowl of creamy leek and potato soup, served with halved breadsticks laid across the bowl as toppled trees: a visible 'forest' on the rim. The soup comforts and warms, while the fallen bread forest directly refers to the storm Austen chaos.

Ingredients

  • 3 leeks
  • 500 g starchy potatoes
  • 1 onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 liter vegetable stock
  • 150 ml heavy cream
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 baguette
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • salt and pepper to taste

Method

  1. Wash the leeks and cut into rings. Peel and dice the potatoes.
  2. Finely chop the onion and garlic.
  3. Heat olive oil in a soup pot and sauté onion and garlic for 2 minutes.
  4. Add leeks and fry for 3 minutes.
  5. Add potato cubes, pour in the stock and bring to a boil.
  6. Simmer for 20 minutes until the potatoes are soft.
  7. Blend the soup until smooth. Add cream and season with salt and pepper.
  8. Cut the baguette into 10 cm pieces and halve lengthwise. Spread with butter.
  9. Toast the halved breadsticks in a dry pan or oven until crisp.
  10. Pour the soup into bowls. Arrange 3 or 4 halved breadsticks diagonally and overlapping on the rim and in the soup to resemble fallen trees.

Serving notes

  • Sprinkle extra leek rings for a 'canopy' effect.
  • Serve extra breadsticks on the side for those who want more.
  • Use deep plates for maximum forest effect.
