Powerless Comfort Crumble

Warm crumble with chocolate fingers as broken power poles: comfort in times of power outages.

A warm apple crumble in a rectangular baking dish, topped with three rows of chocolate fingers as broken power poles. The dish refers to a dark block without light, the fingers symbolize the snapped poles in Gary.

Ingredients

  • 5 large apples (preferably Elstar or Jonagold)
  • 2 tablespoons raisins
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 100 g sugar
  • 100 g flour
  • 75 g oats
  • 100 g cold butter
  • pinch of salt
  • 12 chocolate fingers (e.g. Verkade)

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  2. Peel and dice the apples, mix with lemon juice, raisins, cinnamon, and 50 g sugar.
  3. Spread the apple mixture in a rectangular baking dish.
  4. Mix flour, oats, 50 g sugar, salt, and butter into crumbs.
  5. Sprinkle the crumbs over the apples.
  6. Bake the crumble for 30-35 minutes until golden brown.
  7. Let cool for 5 minutes. Place 3 rows of 4 chocolate fingers on top, some askew, as snapped power poles.

Serving notes

  • Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
  • Make sure the chocolate fingers remain visible as power poles.
