A serene casserole with a spicy surprise on the silent rice street.

A rectangular casserole with a white, silent layer of rice as an empty street, bordered by fried tempeh and vegetables. In the center, a bright red chili pepper as the rebellious tourist. Serene and neat, but with a spicy sting.

Ingredients

  • 400 g pandan rice
  • 2 onions
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 red bell pepper
  • 1 green bell pepper
  • 250 g carrot
  • 400 g tempeh
  • 3 tbsp ketjap manis
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 red chili pepper (whole)
  • 2 tbsp sunflower oil
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 lime

Method

  1. Cook the pandan rice according to package instructions and let it steam dry.
  2. Slice the onions, garlic, peppers, and carrot into thin strips. Cut the tempeh into cubes.
  3. Heat the oil in a large frying pan. Fry the tempeh until golden, add onion and garlic and fry for 2 minutes.
  4. Add the peppers and carrot and fry for another 5 minutes.
  5. Add ketjap manis and soy sauce, season with salt and pepper, and simmer for 2 minutes.
  6. Lightly grease a rectangular oven dish. Spoon the rice into a wide, straight lane in the middle: this is the empty street.
  7. Arrange the fried tempeh and vegetables as a 'border' along both sides of the rice street.
  8. Lay the whole red chili pepper across the rice lane as the rebellious tourist.
  9. Grate some lime over the dish for a fresh note.

Serving notes

  • Serve the dish in the middle of the table so everyone sees the silent street.
  • Slice the chili pepper at the table for extra scandal effect.
