Pope Leo has left the hospital in Rome, four days after his lung cancer surgery. The 71-year-old pope walked without assistance this afternoon to the car waiting for him and paused briefly to talk with people outside the Gemelli hospital who wanted to encourage him.
The pope was discharged from the hospital today by his doctors. They had already indicated that he had recovered enough to go home. Blood tests and chest scans had shown good results combined with a "suitable" overall clinical condition.
The pope upon leaving the hospital:
The pope was diagnosed with an adenocarcinoma, the most common form of lung cancer. On Tuesday, the lower lobe of his right lung was removed. The operation was successful and without complications, but it has not been disclosed how large the tumor was or whether the disease has spread. Doctors are still considering whether further treatment is necessary.
Back to work
The pope has returned to the Vatican. Tomorrow he will appear in public there again. At 12:00 noon, he will give the traditional midday blessing from the window overlooking St. Peter's Square. According to his doctors, he is again able to fully and independently resume his normal daily activities.
In the hospital, he continued working, albeit at half strength. For example, he held a telephone conversation with Russian President Putin, received close Vatican aides, and celebrated mass in an improvised chapel in the hospital.
According to the Vatican, everything is proceeding according to plan. Yesterday, the names of the journalists accompanying a trip to Latin America were announced. That trip is scheduled for November 6 to 17. This gives the pope three more weeks to recover and become fit enough for a large number of flights.
Remarkable openness
Pope Leo XIV was notably open about his medical condition last Sunday. He then informed the faithful in St. Peter's Square that doctors had found a lump on his lung and that it would be removed.
In the vast majority of cases, such a lump is not serious, but during the operation it became clear that in this case it was serious. That news came as a shock worldwide. The American has been pope only a short time, since last May, and is young and energetic compared to previous popes.
