Stacked Cards with Spicy Heist

Based on:

TypeStarter

DateOctober 21, 2026

An edible stack of 'cards' with heat and tang, just like the stolen loot from the news.

Thin, crispy toasts form a stack of 'trading cards', layered with sharp goat cheese cream and tangy pickled vegetables. The stack, slanted on the plate, mimics a pallet of cards from a van. Flavors pull: spicy, sour, and crunchy, matching the tension of the theft.

Ingredients

  • 1 baguette, sliced diagonally
  • 150 g soft goat cheese
  • 100 g cream cheese
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 tbsp milk
  • 1 red onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 small cucumber, thin ribbons
  • 2 tbsp white wine vinegar
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 red chili pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Handful of cress

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C.
  2. Place baguette slices on a baking tray, drizzle with olive oil, and bake for 8 minutes until golden and crisp.
  3. Mix goat cheese, cream cheese, lemon juice, milk, salt, and pepper into a smooth cream.
  4. Combine onion, cucumber, vinegar, sugar, and chili in a bowl and let marinate for 10 minutes.
  5. Spread each toast with a layer of cheese cream.
  6. Add some pickled vegetables to each toast.
  7. Stack the toasts diagonally on a long plate, like a row of trading cards on a pallet.
  8. Garnish with cress for a green 'card corner'.

Serving notes

  • Serve on a long platter for the pallet effect.
  • Let the toasts overlap slightly to mimic a stack of cards.
  • Sprinkle extra chili for more tension.
