A tanker carrying 40,000 tons of Russian diesel is on its way to the United States. The tanker Agioi Fanendes, sailing under the Maltese flag, is currently still in the Baltic Sea. The ship departed yesterday from the Russian port of Primorsk and is expected to arrive in New York on November 7.
The diesel on board is the first shipment of the hundreds of thousands of tons of diesel that Russian President Putin promised to President Trump on October 9. Trump hopes that the supply of diesel from Russia will lower the diesel price in the US, preferably before November 3 when midterm elections are held there.
Due to the globally high diesel prices, farmers and transport companies in the US have been hit hard. Prices are so high because of the war in the Middle East, which began in February with Israeli and American attacks on Iran. Americans currently pay 5.61 euros per gallon (3.79 liters) along the highway. That is 2.43 euros more than two years ago.
Two days after the diesel deal became known, analysts in the British newspaper The Guardian said that the Russian diesel will have "little effect" for American motorists and companies. The amount would be too small for that. Furthermore, it is uncertain whether Putin can fulfill his promise, given the damage oil refineries there have suffered in the war.
3 million tons per month
The American-Russian 'diesel deal' canceled the ban on importing Russian oil products that Trump's predecessor Biden had imposed in 2022. Biden wanted to punish Russia for the Russian invasion of Ukraine that year and the subsequent war.
It was agreed that Russia would deliver 800,000 tons of diesel until the end of next month. Russian Deputy Minister of Defense Novak has said that Russia is capable of supplying the US with 3 to 3.5 million tons per month by the end of the year.
Gift
Ukrainian President Zelensky called the diesel deal a gift for Putin, because Russia can use the oil dollars well for the war effort against Ukraine. According to him, the deal is harmful to Ukraine, the US, and the rest of the world.
"Any easing of sanctions against Russia without a clear and sustainable de-escalation agreement is a weakness," he said. According to him, Russia will respect America less, continue fighting against Ukraine longer, and cause more damage to the world.
