After reportedly holding "constructive talks" with President Putin yesterday according to Russia, American envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arrived in Kyiv today. In a renewed attempt to achieve peace between Russia and Ukraine, they will sit down there with Ukrainian President Zelensky.
The American duo spoke for over three hours with the Russian president at Putin's official residence in Moscow, but little has been disclosed about what exactly was said and agreed upon. A senior foreign advisor to Putin praised the Americans for their thorough preparation and described the meeting as constructive, candid, and useful, but remained silent on concrete results.
'Substantial plans'
The Americans also only spoke of "substantial plans" that were discussed, with results to be presented within "a few weeks." After the talks, Witkoff and Kushner flew almost directly to Rzeszów in Poland to take the train to Ukraine. According to Zelensky, it was not safe for the Americans to travel by plane to Kyiv due to Russian air attacks.
At the train station of the Ukrainian capital, they were welcomed by high government officials after which Zelensky gave the American delegation a tour of the Saint Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv. The cathedral is on UNESCO's World Heritage list and has also been designated as a World Heritage in Danger due to the war.
While the talks in Russia were still ongoing, Zelensky already announced on social media that he was ready to receive the Americans. "We want to bring the end of the war closer," he wrote on X. "Peace is needed. Security guarantees are needed. A dignified post-war peace agreement is needed. Our proposals are ready."
Fighting continues
Zelensky will not conduct the talks with America alone: according to the Kyiv Independent, high-ranking security advisors from Germany, France, and the United Kingdom will also join. It is not known which proposals Zelensky intends to present to Witkoff and Kushner.
Putin and Zelensky had promised to suspend attacks on each other's capitals while the talks were ongoing, but fighting continued elsewhere. According to Ukrainian authorities, drone attacks in the regions of Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv and around Kyiv killed nine civilians, including an 11-year-old child. At least 68 people were injured.
In turn, the Ukrainian army carried out attacks on a large oil refinery in the Russian Ryazan region and on multiple cities deep inside Russia. The Kyiv Independent mentions the southern cities of Rostov-on-Don and Bataisk. Several residential buildings were damaged there, and a child had to be hospitalized.
Witkoff and Kushner, the son-in-law of American President Trump, last visited Moscow in January. This is their first visit to Kyiv.
