A tense row of peppers and pickles waits for your fork—just like in Saxony-Anhalt.

A spicy salad of grilled peppers and pickles, with long strips lined up like people waiting for an autograph. The sharp acidity and red highlights reflect the tension around the AfD in Saxony-Anhalt.

Ingredients

  • 2 red bell peppers
  • 2 yellow bell peppers
  • 4 large pickles
  • 1 red onion
  • 100 g arugula
  • 100 g feta cheese
  • 2 tbsp capers
  • 4 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tbsp white wine vinegar
  • 1 tbsp whole grain mustard
  • 1 tsp honey
  • salt and pepper

Method

  1. Heat a grill pan over high heat.
  2. Cut the bell peppers into long strips about 2 cm wide.
  3. Grill the pepper strips until charred and soft. Let cool.
  4. Slice the pickles lengthwise into four long wedges each.
  5. Slice the red onion into thin rings.
  6. Mix olive oil, white wine vinegar, mustard, honey, salt, and pepper into a dressing.
  7. Spread the arugula on a long platter.
  8. Arrange the grilled pepper strips and pickle wedges in a tight, slightly slanted row over the arugula, like people in line.
  9. Scatter the onion rings, capers, and crumbled feta on top.
  10. Drizzle the dressing over the salad.

Serving notes

  • Serve on a long platter for the best 'line effect.'
  • Let the rows be just a bit uneven for extra tension.
  • Add extra pepper at the end for a sharp finish.
