Russian Gymnastics Federation Angry Over Refusal of Athletes for World Championships: 'Discrimination'
The Russian Gymnastics Federation is furious about the decision of the Dutch authorities to deny visas to, among others, reigning all-around world champion Angelina Melnikova to participate in the World Championships in Rotterdam.
Two other top gymnasts, Viktoria Listoenova and Anna Kalmykova, were also denied visas. According to the Russian federation, the three were told that "one or more member states of the Schengen area consider the athletes a threat to their international relations."
'Gross violation of the principle of equal conditions'
The World Championships run from October 17 to 25 and form the first qualification moment for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. The Russian federation states it was informed of the visa refusal by the Dutch embassy in Moscow.
"The Russian Gymnastics Federation regards the actions of the Dutch authorities as a deliberate attempt to exclude top gymnasts from the fight for World Championship medals and Olympic starting places," according to a statement on the federation's website. "This constitutes direct discrimination against Russian athletes and a gross violation of the principle of equal conditions for Olympic qualification."
Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport: sporting achievements play no role in visa refusals
The refusal of visas to three Russian top gymnasts has nothing to do with their sporting achievements, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport told news agency ANP.
"The Netherlands carefully assesses each application based on the EU visa code. This states, among other things, that a visa can be refused if the applicant is seen as a threat to public order, domestic security, or the international relations of one of the member states."
The Russian federation further indicated that five other gymnasts from the national team, Lyudmila Roshchina, Milana Kayumova, Ilya Zaika, Savely Sedin, and Mukhammadjon Yakubov, are still awaiting a decision on their visa applications.
Russian gymnasts welcome at European Championships in Croatia
Athletes from Russia (and Belarus) have been barred by federations throughout the sports world since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Earlier this year, the international gymnastics federation World Gymnastics lifted the suspension.
Russian athletes participated in the European Championships last summer in Croatia. Angelina Melnikova was also present then and won three gold medals, including one in the team competition.
Russia did not compete in Croatia under the Russian flag but under the name World Gymnastics 2, as was also intended for the World Championships in Rotterdam.
The Russian federation does not accept the decision of the Dutch authorities to deny multiple athletes access and turns to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and World Gymnastics with the request "to assess the situation and its consequences for equal qualification conditions."
